Randolph College astronomy class conducts research at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory

Thirty students recently spent 12 hours getting hands-on experience in a radio astronomy observatory. The astronomy class taught by Katrin Schenk, a physics professor, traveled to the Green Bank National Radio Observatory in Green Bank West Virginia. There, they used the 40-foot radio telescope at to observe the motion of the solar system through the Milky Way galaxy. During an overnight stay students took data in 2 hour shifts between 4 p.m. and 4 a.m., observing the milky way as it passed overhead.
