Science Education Group Wins $140,000 SCHEV Grant

May 10, 2011
For the third year in a row, faculty will use funds to develop research-based teaching methods for elementary and middle school teachers.

Peggy Schimmoeller, Peter Sheldon and Tatiana Gilstrap receive a grant from the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia for a third year in a row.

The title of the grant is “Science and Math Links: Research-Based Teaching Institute”. The Science Education Group trains elementary and middle school teachers how to better teach science, in particular by using hands-on and inquiry based methods, and research the impact. The project includes rigorous assessment on how this training affects teachers’ attitudes towards science, the attitudes of their students toward science and the learning of science (measured from their students’ standardized test scores).
