Peace and Diplomacy Floor

This living-learning community is composed of a group of students looking for a deeper understanding of peace and diplomacy and its relationship to different cultural and political issues.

"The Peace and Diplomacy Floor is the brainchild of a student who is herself a skilled diplomat and committed leader," said Jennifer Abbassi, associate professor of political science and chair of global studies. "The Floor is a great opportunity for students to learn by doing while building their resumes and generating ideas for a better world."

The project was developed by Kate Descoteaux '08 as a Senior Fellow capstone leadership project for the Susan B. Davenport Leadership Program. Descoteaux applied for and received a grant to fund the project.

"Peace and diplomacy will be key ingredients throughout the transition of becoming a co-educational community," said Descoteaux. "A living-learning community with this theme is definitely to be a great asset to Randolph College."

This program seeks to engage students more fully in their college environment and increase involvement in campus activities, helping them develop communication and collaboration skills that are necessary to operate in the college community and later their future career. The goal of the community is to create a dynamic and creative atmosphere that is diverse in culture and will inspire deeper learning in their academic endeavors.

Requirements

Participating students are asked to...

  1. Take one of the following courses...
    • American Cultural Patterns (AMC 203) offered Tuesday/Thursday 3:15-4:30pm
    • World Politics (POL 113) offered Monday/Wednesday/Friday 11:30-12:30pm
    • Peace & Conflict Resolution (POL 107) offered Monday/Wednesday 1:50-3:05pm
  2. Meet bimonthly for one discussion and one campus event.
  3. Write three short blog entries per week in response to the discussions, campus event, or other student blogs.
  4. Develop a community project that will enhance the global environment of Randolph College’s community.
