LYNCHBURG — Randolph-Macon Woman’s College will continue to seek new name suggestions until Nov. 10, the college announced Thursday.
A Naming Advisory Task Force has spent more than a month collecting, researching and discussing possible name changes for the college, which will begin accepting men in the fall of 2007. The Board of Trustees originally hoped to vote on a new name at its Oct. 21 meeting.
The college received hundreds of name suggestions during the past month. The majority of suggestions involved using Randolph and Macon in the name in some way, keeping the college’s initials, or keeping the name the same. The Task Force believes that using forms of the original name will not be feasible, and therefore the community should have another chance to provide suggestions.
"Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and Randolph-Macon College in Ashland have long dealt with confusion regarding their similar names," said Lynn Stuart, trustee and chair of the task force. "Randolph-Macon College has expressed concern regarding having two coed institutions in the same state with similar or identical names. We understand and share that concern. We hope a new name will help eliminate that confusion to the benefit of both schools."
R-MWC will accept new name suggestions until Nov. 10, and anticipates an announcement of a new name in early December.
"Very few institutions have had to ask so much of those who love it as has Randolph-Macon Woman’s College," the Task Force wrote in a letter to the community this week. "For some of us, the College’s single-sex aspect is at its heart. For others, it is the heritage of academic challenge, the awakening of minds, the bonds of sisterhood, or the sense of place. For all of us, its name has become synonymous with a place of learning and beauty. Nevertheless, we face the necessity to name ourselves anew…"
"Our College was originally named by others," the Task Force added. "We are called upon now to claim a new name for ourselves."
Name ideas can be submitted via the College’s Web site (www.rmwc.edu) or by mail
to the President’s Office, R-MWC, 2500 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24503.
