LYNCHBURG — Students from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, Sweet Briar College, and Lynchburg College will host the city’s second Evening of Scenes From Comic Opera on Feb. 17 and Feb. 19 in Smith Hall Theatre.
The Feb. 17 performance will begin at 7:30 p.m., and the Feb. 19 performance will begin at 2 p.m. All performances are $5 for the general public. Ticket proceeds will be used for the funding of an orchestra.
The special four-week class is made up of music and non-music majors and was designed to provide students with the opportunity to experience the thrills and challenges of putting on an opera. Last year’s standing-room only crowd prompted organizers to plan a bigger and better show this year.
“We’ve raised the bar,” said Marcia Jones Thom, adjunct professor and organizer of the event. Thom is also on the board of Lynchburg’s new and only opera company, Opera on the James. The group will be hosting a reception following the Sunday performance.
“I hope people will come and learn to laugh at opera and have an enjoyable evening,” Thom added. “No one needs to come dressed in a tux or an evening gown. They just need to come and have a good time.”
The event will feature students performing seven scenes from comedic operas, complete with elaborate costumes and a special guest appearance from the Cat in the Hat.
“We absolutely encourage families with children to come,” Thom said. “It’s all in English, and all of the scenes are comic in nature. It’s fun, and it’s such a wonderful first exposure for children and adults to opera.”
