LYNCHBURG – Team Randolph narrowly defeated Team Macon in the College’s Ethics Bowl Competition, held Nov. 9 in Jack Lounge.
With a score of 177 to 172, Team Randolph walked away with a $250 cash prize and the honor of representing the College in the state Ethics Bowl, scheduled for Feb. 12-13. The state competition is sponsored by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.
“We had a very competitive match between two excellent teams,” said David Schwartz, associate professor of philosophy.
The teams played two rounds, during which they debated cases involving topics such as personal privacy within political campaigns, the ethics of minimum wage, and whether it is morally permissible to use torture in seeking to prevent terrorism.
Team Randolph members included Lauren Belasco, Viet Dao, Ashley Lynch, and Chi Pham.
Team Macon members included Ellie Brimmer, Angela Grove, and Robin Perdue.
Judges were Jan Hullum, Elizabeth Perry, and Eric Remy.
