LYNCHBURG – R-MWC’s Chorale will perform selections written especially for the College on April 17.

Composers Carol Barnett and Kurt Erickson will be in residence at R-MWC the week of April 12-17. They will work with Chorale in preparing pieces the choir has specially commissioned from them, as well as enjoy several opportunities in class and social settings to meet and discuss composition and professional musicianship with students.

An open rehearsal will be held April 14 at 4:30 p.m. in Houston Memorial Chapel. This rehearsal will allow audience members the opportunity for a question and answer session. Music students from area high schools have been invited to this rehearsal.

For his commissioned work, San Francisco Bay area composer Erickson chose to set a Mary Oliver poem titled, “Robert Schumann,” a reminiscence on the life of the famous composer/pianist.

Barnett, a composer from Minnesota, opted to set a portion of text by R-MWC’s most distinguished alumna, Pearl S. Buck. Barnett’s composition uses an excerpt from “The Good Earth.”

Both selections will be given their world premiere on Sunday, April 17, at 7:30 PM in Houston Memorial Chapel.

A new music program begun last year allows the College’s group of singers to alternate years of touring nationally and internationally with years of commissioning professional artists. Last year, the group traveled to Jamaica to perform.

During the April 17 performance, the Chorale will team up with a professional orchestra and the Hampden-Sydney Men’s Chorus to perform Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de Confessore, K. 339.

The performance, conducted by Dr. Randall Speer, will feature R-MWC music faculty Jeanne Mundy (violin), Ralph Jaxtheimer (cello), and Marcia Jones Thom (soprano). The ensemble will repeat their performance the following evening at Farmville United Methodist Church, Farmville, Virginia.

The open rehearsal and performance are free and open to the public.
