Econ 217 students get out into the community to see where the tax money goes


Elizabeth Sizemore-Perry and her students in ECON 217 "Service Learning in Public Economics" are taking a local, ground-level look at how governments tax and spend.

The students, Jared Perminter, Rachel Peters, and Sarah Stout, relect a diverse array of political backgrounds and philosophies. Their blog entries reflect on the topics and projects of the class as they participate in a service-learning project with the Lynchburg Neighborhood Development Foundation.

The class looks at how microeconomic theories apply to such issues as public goods and externalities, income redistribution, poverty, social security, health care, education, housing, and government revenue generation. They learn how local non-profit organizations and community groups assist the community to achieve social welfare objectives.
