Coulter to present Johnson paper

William Coulter, Eichelbaum Professor of English, will deliver a paper at the East-Central meeting of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies in Baltimore. The paper examines two poems by Samuel Johnson, "London" and "The Vanity of Human Wishes," both imitations of the Roman poet Juvenal. The graphic works of Johnsonís contemporary William Hogarth are brought into play to help shed light on Johnsonís use of visual imagery in these satires.
