William Coulter, Eichelbaum Professor of English, will deliver a paper at the East-Central meeting of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies in Baltimore. The paper examines two poems by Samuel Johnson, "London" and "The Vanity of Human Wishes," both imitations of the Roman poet Juvenal. The graphic works of Johnson’s contemporary William Hogarth are brought into play to help shed light on Johnson’s use of visual imagery in these satires.
