Randolph to Host Conference on Ancient Drama

April 1, 2010
Event will coincide with the October 2010 performances of The Greek Play

The classics department of Randolph College will host a one-day conference “Ancient Drama in Performance: Theory and Practice” on October 9, 2010.

According to organizer Amy R. Cohen, associate professor of classics, the conference will provide an opportunity to witness and reflect on an original-practices Greek play that aims to be a living drama rather than a museum piece and also to share and discuss other productive ways of playing Greek drama.

The meeting will coincide with the production of a new translation of Euripides’ Hecuba directed by Cohen.

Featured speakers include Kenneth Reckford, professor emeritus of classics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Mary-Kay Gamel, professor of literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

The call for papers can be found at http://faculty2.randolphcollege.edu/ancientdrama.

The conference is made possible by a grant from Randolph College.
