The Pearl S. Buck Award

medal Randolph College is proud to sponsor a special award to honor our most distinguished alumna, Pearl Sydenstricker Buck, Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Class of 1914. The award was given for the first time in 1998.

On November 6, 2004, artist and architectual designer Maya Lin became the fifth recipient of the award.

The award recognizes a remarkable woman whose life and work represent compassion, creativity, commitment to human rights, care for children, and a positive vision of the world community. In honor of Buck's accomplishments as a humanitarian and a writer, the Pearl S. Buck Award recognizes women whose lives and achievements reflect her commitments. The award carries a $10,000 honorarium.

Award Criteria

The Pearl S. Buck Award is given to women who exemplify the ideals, values, and commitments of the great humanitarian and distinguished author, Pearl S. Buck. These characteristics might include, but are not limited to, the furtherance of:

  • cross-cultural understanding, especially as it pertains to East-West relations;
  • human and civil rights;
  • children's rights; and
  • the artistic portrayal of a culture to wide audiences.
